Biofuels

In response to the emerging promise of biofuels as a contributor to energy security, FESS works with developing countries to investigate strategies and policies to expand biofuels feedstock. In conducting this work, FESS collaborates with international agencies, national governments, civil society, research institutions, and the private sector.

Biofuels are liquid ethanol, diesel, and gas derived from plants and agricultural crops that can be used for cooking, transportation, and lighting. Biofuels help to replace gasoline and diesel fuel used for transport, heating, and cooking.

At the invitation of The United Nations Environment Programme's Our Planet Magazine, FESS Senior Fellow Mersie Ejigu published an article entitled "Grasping the Nettle," describing the potential role of biofuels to advance African energy security.
